Is being human its own form of being or just a subset of the animal kingdom? While philosophers and sociologists from Aristotles to Descartes have never fully reached consensus in their quests for answers over the centuries, art has its very own resources to examine the differences and similarities between humans and animals. Paintings, objects, and installations deliver astonishing perspectives on the fascination with animalism. What at first sight merely look like zoomorphic characterisations of humans or anthropomorphic depictions of animals, often reveal themselves to be unsettlingly realistic hybrid versions, creating distinct identities, which may appear grotesque in form and features. A pleasure for viewers who seek to imagine more than they are capable to imagine.

The exhibition “Animalism” shows remarkable works from eight different artists, who approach the topic in at least eight different ways.
